Singles Action at Rideau Canal Open (SARCO)
October 2, 2004

After Ontario Bowl, some players stayed around to play in the trash singles action. Though we had plenty of questions available, it was getting late and we devised a shortened version on the spot.

In the first round, we had 2 rooms with 8 players play 50 tossups. If a player reached 120 points, they stopped playing and let others fill out the rest of the score table. For these results, (M) is an affiliation with McGill, (O) with Ottawa, and (T) with Toronto. Results of the first round are below:

Round 1, Game 1
moderators: Ben, Bobby
-Andrew (M): 13/1 = 125 points (39 questions)
-Jessica (M): 6/2 = 50 points
-Andy (Brock): 5/2 = 40 points
-Marie-Anne (M): 4/1 = 35 points
-Peter (M): 4/2 = 30 points
-Yudi (M): 2/0 = 20 points
-Michelle (O): 2/0 = 20 points
-Rachel (M): 1/0 = 10 points

Round 1, Game 2 (50 questions)
moderator: Rahul
-Rico (T): 9/0 = 90 points
-Eric (T): 8/1 = 75 points
-Stephen (T): 9/5 = 65 points
-Zhan (T): 6/3 = 45 points
-Amrut (M): 3/2 = 20 points
-Angela (Carleton): 2/1 = 15 points
-Mel (T): 2/2 = 10 points
-Luke (T): 1/1 = 5 points
-Philippe (O): 0/1 = -5 points

From this, room winners Rico and Andrew qualified to the final elimination round. To see who would join them, a qualifiying round of Bobby (who moderated a first-round game) and the top 7 remaining competitors from the first round played a round of 25 questions:

Round 2 (25 questions)
moderators: Andrew, Philippe
-Bobby (T): 6/0 = 60 points
-Andy (Brock): 3/0 = 30 points
-Stephen (T): 3/1 = 25 points
-Jessica (M): 3/1 = 25 points
-Eric (T): 3/3 = 15 points
-Marie-Anne (M): 1/0 = 10 points
-Zhan (T): 1/1 = 5 points
-Peter (M): 0/0 = 0 points

The top 6 finishers of this round, along with round-winners Andrew and Rico, went on to the elimination round. In our adjusted format, the lowest player at 30 points was eliminated, followed by an elimination every 10 questions until 2 remained at 80 questions:

Elimination Round (80 questions)
moderators: Ben, Philippe
-Andrew (M): 21/7 = 175 points (80 q's)
-Bobby (T): 13/4 = 110 points (80 q's)
-Eric (T): 11/1 = 105 points (80 q's)
-Stephen (T): 6/1 = 55 points (70 q's)
-Andy (Brock): 4/3 = 25 points (60 q's)
-Rico (T): 2/1 = 15 points (50 q's)
-Jessica (M): 2/2 = 10 points (40 q's)
-Marie-Anne: 0/0 = 0 points (30 q's)

So, a final showdown was set between Bobby and Andrew, with the 10 remaining questions on the pack. The players were given a clean slate to start with:

Final Match (10 questions)
moderators: Ben, Philippe
-Andrew (M): 3/0 = 30 points
-Bobby (T): 2/2 = 10 points

After winning his room in less than 50 questions, leading all the way through the elimination round, and finishing it off in the final, Andrew Segal takes the Singles Action at Rideau Canal Open. Congratulations to Andrew and all players that competed.
